When it’s a wash out!
Cycle commuting is great. I love that time to contemplate the world whilst spinning your legs and generally getting moving at the beginning of the day - or winding down at the end of it.
But those days that it rains can be a bit more challenging. I still love the strange calm of riding in the rain, the purposefulness of putting one pedal stroke in after another and not minding the splashes.
However, at the same time I have adopted a variety of waterproofing strategies - a waterproof back pack, waterproof trousers (and waterproof shorts for the warmer rain) and big waterproof jackets.
Sure I have tried waterproof shoes, but their efficacy is rather limited by the huge hole in the top (through which you insert your foot). They often fill with water from above, channeled perfectly by your ankles, rendering irrelevant whatever impermeable material is used to keep the water out from below. In fact, once the calf-drainpipe mechanism is in full flow, waterproof shoes serve only to contain and enclose the increasing puddles of water around your feet. The ewwww of soggy socks and wet feet in needs dealing with in short order on arrival. No one wants to slurp around the office with gradually wrinkling feet in wet socks slopping around in wet shoes.
when you have to wring your socks out in the sink
Recently, I discovered that not only does my Fold+Rºll packing organiser keep clothes neat and ready for the working day, it also has the rather excellent benefit as working as a mat on which you can stand in your bare feet whilst you wring out your socks in the sink. The tiled floor of the company toilets is no longer imprinted with my footprints and my feet not further chilled by the cool ceramic floor.
Not only that, once all the wet, damp and fusty clothes are off, they can be wrapped up in a Fold+Rºll out of sight and out of mind (and out of the way of work stuff). Nothing like rolling your damp socks away to brighten up the day.
And once you’re home, the whole lot can be unbundled straight in to the washing machine. Most of my cycling tops and socks are sportswear that I wash at a reasonably gentle 30º and the Fold+Rºll is washable and just goes in fine with them. Washing instructions are printed on each one (along with a QR code that takes you to the full care details).
Days when everything is completely wet through are rare. However, it’s good to find that you’re equipped to deal with them. The only question is, one Fold+Rºll? Or two?
